Sand Sculpture Festival 2013

Sand Sculpture Festival 2013

Despite last summer being a bit of a wash out, Weston-super-Mare is delighted to be hosting the Weston Sand Sculpture Festival again this year, and the theme for 2013 is Hollywood!

The festival opens on 29th March and runs until the end of September. More than 20 world-class artists from all over the globe will be visiting Weston to create a village of giant sand sculptures, using over 4000 tonnes of Weston’s unique beach sand.

Not only has the festival displayed some of the world’s most amazing sand sculptures, the festival is a family friendly, interactive event; giving you the opportunity to get involved. Our sculptors visit the site on a regular basis and staff are on-hand to answer questions or take you on a guided tour.

If you are thinking of visiting Weston for a day trip and work in a school, the festival encourages school groups who can learn how to make these amazing creations. This year the festival is offering work-based internships to local college students too, involving the local community. And what better a souvenir to take home with you than actually being part of one of the sculptures with an interesting take on the traditional seaside peep-hole photograph.

The Festival also offers opportunities for Team Building Events, so why not allow your business to visit Weston for the day, or a corporate weekend away, and be involved in this unique experience! Your teams will first have to work together to build the foundations required for a sculpture. Then they will have to visualise how to extract a 3D design from those foundations, and take the bold step of carving into the blocks to create their masterpiece. By the end of it your team will not only have created something, but will have solved problems along the way.

Want to take part? For the first time, this year the organisers YOU the chance to suggest what we should sculpt! Go to the Facebook Page prior to the event and make a suggestion! They are also looking for volunteers.

This really is an event that has something for everyone – it’s fun, educational and encourages everyone to take part! It’s worth a visit to Weston-super-Mare, whatever your age, so make sure you add this to your holiday itinerary.
