The Camping and Caravanning Club and Vango present DofE kit to Wexham School
His Royal Highness The Earl of Wessex was The Camping and Caravanning Club’s guest of honour at Windsor Great Park on Tuesday 24 July.
As a trustee of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE), HRH helped commemorate The Duke of Edinburgh’s 60th anniversary as Patron of The Camping and Caravanning Club by presenting camping equipment, supplied by partners Vango, to young people from Wexham School, Slough who will be starting their DofE programmes in September.
Stephen Newlands, Vango’s Group Managing Director, said; “We are delighted to be involved in celebrating His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh’s 60th anniversary as the Club’s Patron. As long term partners of The Camping and Caravanning Club and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, it is such a great privilege to be able to support young people as they progress through their DofE programmes.”
The Club is working with Vango to provide camping equipment ‘starter packs’ as a gift to each of the 10 DofE Regions across the country. Each starter pack consists of tents, cookers, sleeping bags, rucksacks, trek mats, compasses and cutlery sets.
Robert Louden, the Club’s Director General, is delighted that The Earl of Wessex was able to attend. He added; “The Club has always valued its Royal Patronage and it was an honour to welcome The Earl of Wessex to Windsor Great Park earlier this week. Our Club Sites are regularly used for DofE activities, so we know at first-hand how the programme can transform lives.”
Wexham School was selected to receive the generous gift to support its launch of offering pupils the opportunity to undertake DofE activities as a new Directly Licensed Centre. The gift will provide much-needed equipment for students undertaking the Expedition section of their DofE programmes.
Wexham’s decision to become a Directly Licensed Centre is as a result of Slough Borough Council terminating its own DofE Licence in March 2012. So far six schools have taken this route: Wexham School, Langley Grammar, St Bernard’s Catholic Grammar, Slough & Eton CofE College, Herschel Grammar School and Bayliss Court.
Christian Scott, Director for DofE’s South East Region says; “We are incredibly grateful to The Camping and Caravanning Club and Vango for their generous gift. It will make a huge difference to Wexham School; particularly as it is a newly established centre. We are very pleased to welcome these six schools to our network in order to retain access to valuable and enjoyable activities for local young people.
“We were extremely disappointed at Slough Borough Council’s decision to terminate its DofE Licence and have worked hard to recruit local schools to continue this provision. I hope these six schools will shortly be joined by others in the area as calls to the office show there is a real demand locally from young people who wish to develop their skills and employability beyond the more traditional academic subjects and outside the classroom setting.’
