Mountains have fascinated people for longer than we care to imagine. They are special, remote places. Getting to the top is often difficult, takes skill and effort, and sometimes it’s simply not worth the risk because of the conditions. All mountains are special but once in a while you come across one that really stands out. Slieve Donard in the Mourne Mountains of Northern Ireland is one such peak. I climbed it as part of a four peaks challenge by the Club’s Director General, Robert Louden, in support of the 60th anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Robert was raising money and awareness for the DofE Award, and highlighting the Club’s strong links to the charity.
