There are few less welcome sounds in life than the bleep of an alarm clock at 3.50am. The desire to turn it off and roll over was almost irresistible but my girlfriend and I managed to drag ourselves up and out into the night – and let me be very clear, it was still very much the night – for the drive to Ragley Hall in Warwickshire.
