Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Any vehicle – including all cars, caravans (from 1992) and motorhomes – will have a unique Vehicle Identification Number or VIN that’s stamped, probably on a plate, somewhere on the vehicle. On a car or motorhome, it’s normally found in a number of places such as under the bonnet and inside the driver’s door. Caravans generally now carry their VIN plates by the door and stamped on the chassis, typically on the A-frame. A VIN was traditionally known as a chassis number, from the days when cars started off as a bare chassis around which the vehicle was built. The chassis number would be stamped directly on to this base structure.
