Modern airbeds have little in common with the rubberised canvas Li-Los of my childhood that moved from sea and sand to tent interior but never lost their unique smell. Curiously, a 1950s advert for the iconic brand makes no mention of camping: "On the beach, in the country, or even in your own garden, a gaily-coloured Li-lo airbed gives you that last touch of luxury for lazing in the sun."
