Campers invited to war-time festival
The brave voyages of Russian Arctic convoys in the Second World War will be celebrated at a new festival at Loch Ewe, Scotland.
The Loch Ewe World War II Festival marks the 75th anniversary of the convoys and takes place 6-7 May in the loch-side villages of Aultbea and Poolewe, which is less than a mile from Inverewe Gardens Club Site.
Campers attending will enjoy an extravaganza of military and naval re-enactments, including a chance to see a wide range of war-time vehicles such as a Soviet T34 tank, full-size replica Spitfire and Messerschmitt planes and the Russian sail training shop Yuny Baltiets.
There will be entertainment in the form of a movie night, a vintage makeover service and performances from the Highland Swing band and D-Day Darlings singing group, as they reminisce with a splash of vintage glamour.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to sail around the bay on a Sealife glass-bottomed boat – a rare opportunity to see Loch Ewe from a sailor’s perspective.
Elizabeth Miles, Honorary Secretary of the Russian Arctic Convoy Project (RACP), explained: “To gain an understanding of what happened here in the Second World War, we thought a full-scale re-enactment and themed entertainment would give it immediate colour and context.
“We are also honoured to have some of the few remaining veterans attending, whom, against the odds, came through this dire time.”
• Tickets are available for the various events of the festival including entry to re-enactment camps, the Highland Swing band, D-Day Darlings singing trio and movie night on the RACP website.
• You can book a pitch at our perfectly-located Inverewe Gardens Club Site by calling 024 7647 5426 or check on the website. More details can be found in your Siteseeker 2017-18 guide.
