Renewed CO warning for campers
Campers and caravanners are once again being reminded of the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.
At the start of Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week (21–27 November), the Club and partners are reminding everyone to be extremely vigilant about CO and the devastating effects it has.
The odourless, colourless gas has been known to cause fatalities among campers. It occurs when any fossil fuel is burned, so the Club strongly urges campers never to take fuel-burning appliances into a tent, awning or enclosed space, even if they are cooling.
The warning comes as politicians prepare for further discussion around CO’s dangers to campers and caravanners in particular.
The All-Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group (APPCOG), with which the Club is involved, will meet in the new year for round-the-table talks on how to further educate the industry about CO.
In recent years the Club has been at the forefront of warning campers about the gas and tent manufacturers have supported efforts by adding warning labels to their products.
The APPCOG has also placed scrutiny on a range of carbon monoxide alarms after a Which? consumer report found that many, especially cheaper imported models, did not conform to British Standards.
