Berghaus battles ‘Black Friday’
Like Matt LeBlanc on Top Gear, Black Friday is an American import that divides opinion – and Berghaus is fighting back.
In the USA, the first shopping day after Thanksgiving is traditionally the start of the Christmas shopping frenzy, with bargain-hunters vying for heavily discounted products.
The consumer custom has crossed the pond thanks to Amazon and Asda, owned by US retail giant Walmart – and some people think it’s just not very British.
Instead of discounting products on its website, UK outdoor specialist Berghaus will hand out 1,000 prizes that can be claimed by visiting one of four outdoor locations in England, Scotland and Wales on Saturday 26 November.
The Get Out Game has been designed as a mental and physical challenge for consumers. The only way to find the prizes is to sign up online, solve a series of clues that will be given in the lead up to and on Black Friday, and then head outdoors the following day to find one of four flags planted by Berghaus.
The first five people to find each flag will win an Extrem Micro Down jacket from the brand’s latest range. There will be hundreds of additional prizes at each location, with a total of 1,000 prizes available.
Richard Leedham, Berghaus’ Brand President, said: “Black Friday has become a phenomenon that now seems to last a whole weekend, but this is not a development that reflects the values we hold dear at Berghaus. Rather than indulge in the discount shopping mayhem, we think that a healthier alternative – for body and soul – is to explore the outdoors.
“There are no catches in this. The Get Out Game is simply an initiative that will take everyone who participates on a journey into the outdoors that will provide rewards. Berghaus kit will be part of those rewards, but we hope that the biggest prizes that people take home are wonderful memories about great experiences in fantastic places.”
