Kelvedon Hatch has a once-secret nuclear
bunker – designed to hold 600 personnel in
the event of war. It is now a museum.
The village church is famous for its Arts and Crafts architecture.
Brentwood is four miles from Site. It has
several attractions, including Mountnessing
Windmill – a restored, working post mill.
Trains into London go from Brentwood
every ten minutes. Buses to the station stop
half a mile from Site. Underground trains
depart from Upminster on the District Line.
The RAF moved to Blake Hall in 1940 after the destruction of North Weald Aerodrome. A museum commemorates this in the Hall’s North Wing. Also at the Hall, the Tropical House holds one of the largest private collections of plants in the UK.
Old MacDonald’s Farm has a breeding
colony of red squirrels.
Ingatestone Hall is one of the finest
Tudor mansions in the country, but
check its opening times.
The Epping Ongar Railway runs
through six miles of beautiful Essex
countryside. A vintage bus often
connects the line to the London
Underground Central Line
at Epping.
South Weald,
Thorndon and Hutton
Country parks are all
nearby.
The church of St Andrew at
Greensted-juxta-Ongar is thought to
be the world’s oldest log church.
There are several
good places for eating
out near Site.
Did You Know
The Kelvedon Hatch bunker was built in the 1950’s and designed to hold up to 600 people. It opened as a rotor station, rotor being the code name for the updated and improved air defence system.
Eat Local
There is a good farm shop a mile and a half from Site, selling a range of local produce, including fruit, vegetables, meat and bottled beers.
