On the outskirts of the county town of Hertford, our Club Site is next to the university campus. It is a great base for exploring the countryside – or you can take the train into London.

The town of Hertford is less than a mile away. It has a local museum, good shopping facilities and many places to eat.

Hatfield House is a Jacobean house, rich in paintings, furniture, fine tapestries and armour, home to the Marquess of Salisbury.

Paradise Wildlife Park claims to be Britain’s friendliest zoo, with tigers, lions and camels.

Knebworth House is a stately home also famous for its rock concerts. It appears in many TV shows and films.

Whitewebbs Museum of Transport is in a Victorian pumping station. Its vehicles date from 1906 to the present day.

Take the train into London from Hertford East – a 20-minute walk from Site. An all inclusive ticket covers rail, underground and bus travel throughout the capital.

Waltham Abbey has a 12th century church and an Art Nouveau Town Hall. The Epping Forest District Museum hosts “historical happenings” throughout the year.

Capel Manor Gardens is a College of Horticulture, open to visitors. It has 30 acres of grounds, including an Italianate Maze and Japanese Garden.

The Roman city of St Albans – Verulamium – has a beautiful cathedral dedicated to St Alban, the first British martyr.

Lee Valley Regional Park stretches 26 miles along the Rive Lee.

Much of the town centre of Hertford is a Conservation Area, with Georgian shop fronts.

There is a monthly Farmers’ Market in Hertford. Foxholes sells locally-reared beef.

Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting, was the Club President from 1919 until his death in 1941.
