This is a Certificated Site (CS). These select sites are small, privately run campsites that operates under the Club’s jurisdiction and can only accommodate up to 5 caravans or motorhomes. They range from secluded Hideaways to fully facilitated family friendly sites, and are often found in locations where larger commercial sites are prohibited so you could be camping close to a beach or in the National Park, for example.

Didn't meet the owner, as we were out quite a lot of the time but she sounded cheery and helpful on the phone. Left money in post box by gate. Pitched adjacent to road and were not disturbed by traffic, Had great views of wildlife on river from overcab bed on waking up.
Entrance slightly awkward first time, but ok when you are used to it. The handle is behind the RH gate post.
Our hose was not long enough to fill tank with water from recommended tap.
Whitby now has some disc parking [ 2 hours] and also a Park and Ride.

Having booked the site 2 months previously, on arrival there were no spaces available. No contact could be made with the owners despite leaving a voice mail which was not returned.
On first appearance the site, with 6 units on, was obviously very cramped with no space for awnings. It also appeared that access to a large commercial static caravan site ran through the middle of the CS site!
My first impression of the site was that it was a gravel car park!

If you looking for a small site close to Whitby, then you won’t go wrong. This place gets 5* for location. The River Esk flows past the front gate, easy walks around and only 2 odd miles out of Whitby itself. Unfortunately that were it ends.
During the course of a 14 night stop over July / August 2012, seven of those nights we had 6 vans/motor homes on site. In larger sites this normally would not be an issue or noticeable, but this site is very small, the space between the vans is far to close, people could not put up awnings if they wanted to. We had the main electrical box out side our front door.
As the owners don’t live next to or on the site they pop in sometime during the day. When we arrived we had no idea were to park, on calling the owner we just got voice mail, so just chose a spot to suit, fortunately the site only had two other caravans on site at the time otherwise it might have been difficult to get on, as we are towing a fifth wheel.
New arrivals would question people already onsite stating that they were allocated to their pitch. Making it awkward and embarrassing for all concerned. Fortunately all campers worked together otherwise it could have become a major issue.
The position of the site make satellites useless (Astra 28), and we could not get TV reception at all, some others however did but were on the opposite side to us, but that should change in September when the Digital Switch over comes in hopefully.
I suppose the true test is, would you return? And I must say no on this occasion. That does sadden us, as we have stayed at various sites in the UK over the last six months of our two year tour, having met numerous nice people and site owners.
If all vans put up awnings and had adequate space between them, then the size of this site would only just suit three vans. If that was the case, then I would have no hesitation in returning, because the location is great.
