Anne & I have just spent two very pleasurable weeks at the site. Jeff and Sheila made us very welcome and presented us with a dozen eggs to be going on with (with more at regular intervals!) Also they made a point of seeing us every day to have a chat and check if everything was OK. I had gone to that area to explore the central section of Hadrian's Wall (i.e. Greenhead to Corbridge) and Jeff proved to be a mine of very useful information about the various sites to see. We could not have chosen a better location for exploring the Wall, and wishing to minimise the use of the car, I could easily access public transport links (bus and train) nearby, going both East and West. On the site, a new toilet and shower block has recently been completed and the facilities were excellent. The addition of a disabled toilet and an undercover dish washing facility is currently in hand. The site is situated just off the A69, Carlisle to Newcastle road with very easy access to supermarkets in Haltwhistle , Haydon Bridge and Hexham. For those requiring some serious retail therapy, (my apologies to long suffering husbands) the Metro Centre is about 40 mins drive away, on the outskirts of Newcastle, just off the A1. In summary, if you are thinking of coming up to this area, then I would have no hesitation in recommending this site to anyone.

Jeff and Sheila have made a great CS with hard standings and hookups plus a new loo and shower block (shower nearly completed). Site has easy access just off main road between Newcastle and Carlisle and is flat and elevated. Only 10 to 15 minute walk into local village with good pub, shop, pottery, railway station and bus stops. About an hour to Newcastle (and Metrocentre) by train, runs every couple of hours. Around 2 1/2 mile walk to Vindolanda Roman fort site with great museum and a further mile to Hadrian's wall. Similar distance South through Bardon Mill over River South Tyne through country to Allen Banks NT woodland riverside walk, then you have lots of routes to choose from. We saw lots of wildlife including fallow deer on the walk. The best part though is the friendly welcome we had from Jeff when we arrived. We were even given some lovely fresh eggs laid by the farm's free range hens, and they are truly free range, "for your breakfast". We also enjoyed seeing the rescue donkeys and sheep in the adjacent fields all enjoying life at Brockalee. The main road is quite close but didn't bother us. Not too noisy and it's quite fun watching the vehicles from the site, if a police car goes past with its siren going the donkeys join in by braying! There is a path to the village, just across the main road. The view of the stars on the clear nights is amazing as there is little light pollution here. We will hopefully come back to this CS as we had a great few days relaxing and gentle walking with some lovely chats with Jeff, picking up local knowledge of places to see.
