Pitch in a lovely clearing in the forests of Northumberland in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and European Geopark.

Haltwhistle Club campsite’s setting in a clearing in Bellister Wood makes it the ideal get-away-from-it-all camping destination. The wood, once part of the Bellister Castle Estate, is now managed by the National Trust and is a haven for wildlife and you could find yourself sharing your pitch with rabbits and birds, including woodpeckers.

This 50 pitch site between the Northumberland National Park and North Pennines is surrounded by magnificent walking and cycling country. The Haltwhistle Rings – a series of 22 local walks is one way to take in the local scenery along with Hadrian’s Wall, five miles from the campsite, offers picturesque walking opportunities.

Back at Haltwhistle campsite, the adjacent River Tyne provides fishing for those with the appropriate rod licence.

After a day cycling or walking or enjoying some of the area’s many attractions our secluded campsite among the trees is a peaceful oasis to relax and unwind. The modern facilities include showers and toilets, a laundry and washing up area.

Visited April 2016 for 4 nights in motorhome. Entry might be a little difficult for larger units so, as handbook says, make sure you arrive after 12:00 to minimise possibility of meeting site leavers. Warm welcome from the Wardens, who struck just the right level of information and friendly informality. Site is on National Trust land fringed by woodland on one side and River South Tyne on the other. Toilets, laundry, Reception/Shop all fully refurbished this year and are therefore 5star. Each shower even has 4 hooks! Abundant wildlife including Red Squirrels (and Black Sheep). Decent walking from the site and Hadrians Wall attractions around Haltwhistle all within easy drive. Super site, unreservedly recommended.

What a gem (should I be telling you all)! Had a lovely walk along the river bank into Haltwhistle but cheated with a taxi back (8) with our shopping. Plenty of parking for those with transport. Unfortunately the council axed the bus service that ran near the site this year. Had two days out in the van visiting various places along the Wall. All had good parking and for 4 a day, could use the same ticket along the [P] signposted areas accessing the Wall. There is also a very efficient bus (AD122) that stops at various places along the Wall too. Didn't see the Cycle Path until we were leaving but this has given us a good excuse to return. And return we will! Still plenty more to see.
