Overview

This is a Certificated Site (CS). These select sites are small, privately run campsites that operates under the Club’s jurisdiction and can only accommodate up to 5 caravans or motorhomes and up to 10 trailer tents or tents, unless express permission has been given by the Club to accommodate more. They range from secluded Hideaways to fully facilitated family friendly sites, and are often found in locations where larger commercial sites are prohibited so you could be camping close to a beach or in the National Park, for example.

The well-spaced pitches are equipped with electric hook ups and water. There is a chemical disposal point and waste bins are provided on site. We allow well-behaved dogs so long as they remain on leads at all times. Dog owners are required to ‘clean up’ and to ensure their pets do not disturb other campers. The site has wide ranging views especially to the north and east. Sunrise over the downs can be most impressive for the early risers! If you walk south for 0.5m to the cliff at Barnes’ high you will see spectacular sunsets to the west beyond Tennyson down and the Needles. There is a comprehensive network of local footpaths. Many visitors choose to abandon their vehicles for the day and set out on long circular excursions. It is surprising how far some of them have gone.

very well looked after by site owner, peaceful, good views, flat site. we spent a week of this site, lovely walks in the area. our cat on her lead enjoyed watching the wildlife. Brian was very helpful with information and when we had gale force winds one night, he would have let us to move pitch, we stayed where we were.

Fantastic Site in a Delightful Location Brian Russell maintains the site really well. The grass is regularly cut and is better quality than mine at home! If you are looking for a peaceful, quiet location in a rural setting this is it. The location is excellent for exploring West Wight eg Compton Bay, Coastal walks round the Needles. Recommend the site highly!

Back again and so pleased to be back. Such a great site to come and stay at. We tend to only stay at CS site and this one is the best of them all. The grass is kept sort and all the cutting are boxed so no grass being trodden into the van. The views are just breath taking across the downs. And all the pitches are twice the size of most other CS site. Brian always has a smile a kind word for all us holiday maker. Will we be back I do think so :-)

This is possibly the best CS/CL site we have ever visited.

This review is for Thorncross Farm

This is possibly the best CS/CL site we have ever visited. The owner is very friendly and helpful without being intrusive. We booked on to this site for a week but it was so good we stayed for a fortnight! The site is level and beautifully kept with closely mown grass. There are loads of water taps by the pitches and picnic tables as well. Access is easy via the grass access "lane" via the A road running along the south coast of the island, known as the Military Road. The site is large and because it is a CS, it is not crowded - in fact for much of the time we were there, we were the only unit on site. Views from the site of the downs etc. are exceptional and there is a private path to the cliff top coastal path which, again, is kept closely mowed. Access to the beach is from Brook, a short drive away and also from a number of other small car parks (some National Trust) accessed from the Military Road. The nearest village is Brighstone which is very attractive and there is a particularly good village shop selling a wide range of foodstuffs and other items. There are also other amenities here including a car park/ public toilets, newsagent, pub, village museum/library and churches etc.. There are very attractive gardens at a National Trust property at Mottistone, the next village from Brighstone. We traveled from Southampton to East Cowes by Red Funnel ferries and the crossing takes about an hour - this is the first time we had taken our caravan by ferry but the crossing was easy and trouble free. The route from East Cowes to the site which is recommended by Brian, the site owner, includes B roads but these were fine for towing and caused no problems at all. We had an absolutely brilliant holiday here and would recommend this site to anyone. Brian is a very caring person and made us feel really welcome and special.
