Camping on the Isle of Wight – perfect for relaxing on this tiny island, just a short ferry trip from the England’s south coast.

You’ll find our Adgestone Club campsite in a quiet countryside setting on the beautiful Isle of Wight close to the popular Sandown resort.

Although a large site – 270 pitches – the site is very well laid out with some secluded pitches and is orientated towards families. Adgestone is the only Club Site with a swimming pool which is heated from June until the first week of September and a children’s paddling pool. In addition to the usual toilet/shower facilities, the site also boasts two children’s play areas – one for younger campers and another more extensive area for older children as well as table tennis, boules, outdoor chess and giant jenga. There’s also a shop and takeaway on site and a private fishing pool stocked with carp.

There numerous walking and cycling opportunities from the campsite. Beach lovers are spoilt for choice with the seaside resorts of Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor, Cowes and Ryde all close by. For days out Dinosaur Isle, Shanklin Chine, the Needles and Blackgang Chine shouldn’t be missed.

Adgestone Vineyard, overlooking Brading Down – itself worth exploring for its spectacular views across Culver Down and Sandown Bay - offers tours of its wine cellars and tastings. Its café serves excellent cream teas too.

Wightlink Ferries  offer great discounts to all Club member.

From the moment we arrived I had a feeling that our stay would not be as enjoyable as our previous visit 4 years ago. The first thing we noticed was how empty the site was. When we made our previous visit nearly all of the pitches were occupied. This time there were whole sections completely empty. The installation of a gate across the main access road appeared to serve no purpose whatsoever except inconvenience for campers staying on the site. The welcome we received was far less than friendly, and during our stay it seemed that campers were more of an inconvenience to staff who, whilst mostly absent, seemed to forget that their site was full of people on holiday. I had been looking forward to lazy afternoons by the pool with the children but that also went out the window due to much reduced availability of the pool coupled with incredibly officious life guards. The shower blocks were also ina poor state with showers that dribbled water and dirty sinks and toilets. Come on Camping & Caravanning Club, this used to be one of our favourite sites and is so well placed on the Island that it should be one of the best sites to visit. However, unless some changes are made we will look for an alternative site next time we want to camp on the Island.

The directions from the club website are vague at best, even following the suggested route access is tight, halfway down the road you're faced with a sign saying 6'6" max width so you have to have faith and keep going. We eventually arrived at the site at around 11.30am and I know your not supposed to get there before 12 noon but I was hoping for a bit of flexibility, hmmm not on this site, we had to park up blocking in cars parked on the visitors car parks, there were plenty of pitches free and the site had at least 4 wardens wandering around but it was definitely going to be 12 noon before anyone was going to book us on, it would have have taken 5 minutes to sort us out and move me off the entrance area. Once on the pitch and level, the site slopes quite a lot so take some chocks, we explored the site, facilities are good and were fairly clean and tidy the showers are excellent, the shop on site stocked a decent range of provisions and does good takeaway food, the breakfast was great value. There is a fantastic little fishing pond, we caught fish all afternoon, the site has a number of play areas for kids, plenty of taps, and a fantastic swimming pool. which was well organised, warm and clean. We had a few issues, the ?5 deposit for the key to the disabled facilities wasn't refunded, so that appears to be a ?5 payment, having to pay for wifi on any site is taking the mick and should be addressed by the club, access to and from this particular site is awkward because of the narrow lanes, and it's location means driving to get anywhere. Overall I was left feeling disappointed with the site, not for any single reason in particular but it just didn't leave me feeling like I was staying on a site owned by the club I'm a member of. Pros - good facilities, swimming pool, fishing pond, on site takeaway. Cons - location, access, unwelcoming atmosphere, TV reception.

We booked the camping site because we like the Isle of Wight and my wife had stayed here previously. We had a wonderful stay with our young kids. The kids absolutely loved the swimming pool and the fact that they had life guards made us feel much more safe. The life guards have recieved a few criticisms in the posts but I found them to be very professional and always checking to make sure everyone is safe. When I smashed open my head on the bottom of the pool the lifeguards were brill. The managers were very easy to talk to and always asking how we were. They are new to the role this summer but it doesn't show (they have managed previous sites). The location was excellent, near to some excellent beaches but far enough away to feel like its in the country. We set up near to the small park and found that lots of parents with young children had the same idea. Before long the children were all playing together and in and out of each others tents. We made some good friends. Positive points - the location, the staff, the swimming pool, other campers, walk to see the squirrels, the shop and its cooked breakfasts Negative points - the ice blocks felt expensive for the cool boxes, some of the people in their caravans play their tv's too loud. Thank you to the managers and staff for helping to make it an amazing holiday. Keep up the good work and we will see you again next year.
