Things to see and do while camping in Inverness
There’s a wealth of things to do and places to explore in and around Inverness. From enjoying the wild nature of the Scottish Highlands to visiting the many historical places of interest, there’s something for all to enjoy in this part of Scotland.
1. Being the biggest city in the Scottish Highlands, camping in Inverness offers the best of a city break alongside the most beautiful landscapes for walking and cycling. Trails, paths, mountains, rivers and glens are all yours to explore.
2. Inverness Castle sits above the city, overlooking the River Ness. It’s hard to miss the magnificent structure, which is undergoing work to open to the public, having been closed off for almost 200 years.
3. The drive from Inverness to Loch Ness takes around 30-minutes if you’re not prepared to make the journey on foot along the Loch Ness 306 Trail, which is incredibly popular. Loch Ness is truly brilliant for all ages; kids can look out for Nessie and adults can enjoy the landscape, wonderful photography opportunities and local attractions. 4. While visiting Loch Ness, the ruins of Urquhart Castle are worth visiting, offering wonderful views from above.
5. Not far from the shores of Loch Ness is one of Scotland’s most beautiful waterfalls. The Falls of Foyer, meaning ‘smoking falls’ in Gaelic, are well worth the challenging climb down to the viewing platform.
6. Between Fort William and Inverness, you can visit Eilean Donan Castle, which is one of the most beautiful attractions nearby. It’s easy to see how the castle inspired the Disney film Brave.
7. Culloden Battlefield, the site of the famous hour-long battle, is in Inverness and has a visitor centre and interactive exhibition to explore.
8. Inverness Museum & Art Gallery is another great place for learning about the history, geography and people of the Highlands.
9. The River Ness runs through Inverness, and a walk along the river bank is a great way to see the city and look out for wildlife like seabirds and seals.
