Overview

Family fun on the edge of Ober Water

Watch spectacular sunsets in the company of free-roaming ponies, cattle and donkeys from our family friendly campsite at Aldridge Hill. Deep in the New Forest, the campsite is bordered by the shallow Blackwater stream and Ober water. There is no shop on the campsite but the picturesque Brokenhurst, a small town just 2 miles away, has a mini supermarket, gas and camping supply shop and several little cafés. Official, marked cycle paths pass close to the campsite and make an ideal way to see the forest, though ponies and horses can be rented from local stables for those who prefer horseback. There are a host of attractions nearby to keep children and adults entertained including the Longdown Activity Farm, the New Forest Reptile Centre and the National Motor Museum, there is also the rare plant collection at Furzey Gardens and the New Forest Wildlife Park, for those who haven’t seen enough local wildlife around the campsite. If you are looking for a back-to-basics camping experience, surrounded by the best that nature can offer, this is the campsite for you.

Note: Please be aware that there are no toilets or showers, no electricity and no hardstandings available on this site. Own chemical toilet essential.

This review is for Aldridge Hill - New Forest

This is a basic site with no facilities, so if your a glamper don't bother reading any further. We stayed after prolonged rain, and signs of flooding were very evident in parts of the site. Although you can pitch anywhere you like we were also advised by the staff where not to pitch and we found a pitch which was firm and dry. Pitches are fairly flat throughout the site. There are several water points around the site, as well as waste disposal, rubbish and recycling points. The river Ober runs along one side of the site, and at this point it is little more than a large shallow stream which the children enjoyed paddling in. There are also other activities run by the managers for the children. Some kind of treasure hunt, a nature trail thing. Not too sure what they all are as we only have a baby who's too young for that stuff. The site is open to nature so the ponies have a free run of the site, however I think someone must clean up after them as there wasn't that much mess about. Due to it's remoteness, in the evenings the site is dark, and only lit by the moon and other campers units, which on a clear summers evening makes for great star gazing. The site managers were helpful and friendly, and offer mobile phone & leisure battery charging for a fee as well as freezer pack re-freezing. To further annoy glampers, we found only a very weak O2 mobile signal available, and very sporadic signal on Orange & T-Mobile, and no network on Vodaphone. Digital TV signal is good. Generators are permitted between 9-11am and 3-5pm only. The village of Brockenhurst is a 1. 5mile walk and has a variety of shops for souvenirs, cream teas and the like as well as 2 small supermarkets (Tesco Metro and Nisa). There is also a pet shop/camping supplies shop just in case you forget anything.

Busy at weekends with units crammed onto the site.

This review is for Aldridge Hill - New Forest

Busy at weekends with units crammed onto the site. Quite peacefull during the week Organiser not on site full time. Site poorly drained so a little rain quickly causes flooding. Ponys come and go as they please which is nice. Attractions, Beaulieu Motor Museum and House well worth the double visit (free second time around when we went) as was the Falconry display. Bucklers Hard was interesting. Solent Sky Museum also interesting (Southampton - follow the dock signs). Traffic in Lyndhurst is a nightmare especially coming from Brockenhurst. Good camp shops in Brockenhurst and do visit the Chippy to the south of the Village. Allow extra time to travel south from Brockenhurst, we caught the level crossing everytime we went south with one exception in 2 weeks.
