This was my second stay at Ashurst, my first being during the school holidays, and was noticeably quieter as you would expect! On both visits we were welcomed warmly, and of course given the list of rules as required by the forestry commission. They are common sense rules to be honest and nothing that detracts from the holiday! You can pitch pretty much anywhere on site - off peak this certainly gives ample choice of secluded spots or more open areas. The site is massive, and even on our last trip in August, it was easy to find a spot. This is one of only 2 Camping in the Forest sites with toilets and showers, and there are plenty of them for when the site is busy. Showers were nice and hot, although the cubicals are small. Facilities are only going to be as clean as the people using them - last trip they were spotless after the team had been in, less so as the hours went on! This time they were spotless throughout. This site is located in the East of the national park and is closest to Southampton. The road outside the site is busy and traffic noise can be heard on site. Lyndhurst is walkable in about an hour, and the village of Ashurst within 10 mins - the fish and chip shop is good! There are pubs in the village too that serve food. Great site and well located if getting into Southampton is important - if not then there are quieter, more secluded sites, although not all have showers available. Will be back, but will definitely be trying Roundhill at some point too (the other site with toilets and showers).

We are fairly regular to this site normally visiting at least once a year (twice in 2016).

We are fairly regular to this site normally visiting at least once a year (twice in 2016). The site is situated adjacent to the main Totton to Lyndhurst road but is set back far enough to negate any noise from traffic. There is also a railway running along one side of the site but again the trains are not really a problem. Ponies however can be if you do not follow the simple rules of not leaving food out as they will try and eat it and we have seen them opening awnings and gazebos to get at food that has been left on tables. A great place for kids to run about with plenty of open space interspersed with trees. There are a few cycle tracks and forest walks originating on the site and a couple of pubs within a five minute walk. There is a convenience store about ten minutes by foot away and the town of Lyndhurst is an easy cycle ride or drive. There is a bus stop just outside for those not wishing to cycle walk or drive the three miles or so to the main town. Not far away are the New Forest Wildlife park and Longdown dairy farm, both of which are great for kids. There is a central shower block that has two sides, one is always open if the other side is being cleaned, they are as clean as the campers leave them to be honest but the staff do make regular checks and they get a good clean out at least once daily. There is a tent only area as well as couple of hard standings for caravans and motor homes. I advise that if, like me you are prone to getting bitten by midges, that you pack insect repellent as there can be rather a lot around its a forest and forests have midges. Plenty of wildlife to be seen and heard and last visit we were visited by the resident Tawny Owl and its characteristic twit-awoo call.

Our first visit to the New Forest, we loved it and will return.

Our first visit to the New Forest, we loved it and will return.Arrive on sunday after 12 midday once the weekenders have left. ponies wonder freely around the site, and as we are the intruders they rule the roost, they caused us no problems and we enjoyed their presence.(Follow the rules and you will have no problems). Being able to cycle straight into the forest was a bonus for our Grandchildren, they were able to cycle to local attractions. The forest wild life center is well worth a visit with something for all ages. There are many walks and cycle paths to enjoy enabling you to travel to the nearby villages and sample good food and the occasional welcome cool beverage without travelling on busy roads. Our only criticism would be that some campers cannot resist feeding the ponies!
