Site appears very large, but only the hard standings are flat, in general.

This review is for Bracelands - Forest of Dean

Site appears very large, but only the hard standings are flat, in general. Noise from selfish people with barking dogs was unbearable, may as well have stayed at the local traveller's site for more peace and quiet. Won't ever be going back.

Firstly I would like to say what a warm welcome I received despite being an an hour late on a Sunday evening! Very understanding with a c'est last vie' attitude. The site and facilitlies were clean and we'll laid out , typical of the usual standards at at many C & C sites. In the forest so peaceful with good views of the countryside. Great for visiting the local sights but be very careful on local roads, observe the warnings as there is one that is very narrow and single lane. Well worth the visit.

There are a decent number (~100) of flat level hardstanding pitches nearest to the entrance roads. These are up to club standard for a caravan/motorhome hardstanding, we stayed with caravan and awning and were very happy with the pitch. Its CC-style in that you pick the one you want rather than being allocated. The site overall is very hilly but they have used sensible terracing to get the hardstanding pitches flat. If at the top of the hill as we were a little windy (but a good windbreak sorts that) compensation is wonderful sunset views as west facing. you need to pitch facing west (or east) due to the wind - we did see a couple of vans on grass pitched N/S with awnings facing into the wind, with the awnings damaged / blown down after one very stormy/windy night. The facilities points (water, waste, chem disposal, refuse) are clean , modern, and again up to club standards. Likewise the 3 toilet blocks have plenty of capacity (even when full aug bank hol) and are clean, although they are not spanking new they are perfectly decent and would look ok on a club site. I guess previous bad comments about the blocks must have pre-dated a refurbishment. Not a "party-site" even on the bank holiday, generally quiet well before 2300, at least in the HS area. towing is a twisty steep a-road from monmouth. The other road symonds yat is impassible to caravans/RV. Around the rest of the site, which is several very large sloping fields there is free-pitching (i.e. pitches are not marked/allocated just go where you like) on grass.very hilly flat, so not so ideal for large tents perhaps. No wifi, little/no mobile on EE, Voda ok, others not sure. big coop& takeways in coleford (5-10 mins). local area has absolutely loads to do from an outdoor activities point of view - canoeing, cycling, walking, castles, various outdoor centres. good base for the MTB trails at Cannop which we used and clearly many others at the site as well judging by the number of MTBs on racks. We will be back

The staff were very helpful, especially when we asked if we could change from grass to hardstanding. Excellent leaflet from reception and waymarked routes through the forest to Symonds Yat Rock. Although the site is in a beautiful position we felt that the amenity block could do with updating. No curtains or doors on the cubicles for washing and the showers need some attention. Black mould around the base of the shower cubicles. However, was lovely and hot.
