Perfect walking country on the Pennine Way

Our Crowden Club Site enjoys a remote location at the northern end of the Peak District National Park. The area is a walker’s paradise and our campsite reflects this. It has a well-stocked shop selling the basics and farm fresh eggs. In addition to shower and toilet facilities, Crowden campsite has a drying room – a useful addition for backpackers and cycle campers.

From the campsite, walkers can indulge in a gentle stroll along footpaths or stride out on a stretch of the long-distance Pennine Way. The nearby Longendale Trail follows the former Woodhead railway from Hadfield to the Woodhead Tunnels and enjoys stunning views over Torside Reservoir.

North-west of Crowden the pretty Chew Valley with its reservoirs, rivers and canals provides some of the region’s best walks. Mountain biking, sailing and horse riding is also possible here as well as fishing in the canals.

There are plenty of places to visit from the campsite too. Howden and Ladybower Reservoirs, south east of the campsite are where the Dam Busters was filmed. Or head north to Holmfirth, the town known as the location for the TV series Last of the Summer Wine, which looks out over the spectacular Holme Valley. The magnificent Chatsworth House and Gardens and Chatsworth Farmyard and Adventure Playground near Bakewell are a great family day out. Just north of here is the famous plague village of Eyam. Eyam Moor above the village is great for walking. There’s more wide open space and romantic landscapes to enjoy at the National Trust’s Marsden Moor Estate north of Crowden campsite.

Leave the peace and quiet behind and in an hour’s drive you can enjoy the shopping and entertainment options of Manchester, Liverpool and Sheffield.

We spent two wet nights at this lovely little campsite.

We spent two wet nights at this lovely little campsite. Despite poor weather we managed to do a lovely walk around the nearby reservoirs, though the town of Hadfield was disappointing. Two good showers and all the facilities were kept clean. The drying room was much appreciated. Quite a remote location with no pub to walk to, so it's worth stocking up on provisions.

Cannot believe it has taken me forty eight years to visit this site.

Cannot believe it has taken me forty eight years to visit this site. It's like a little piece of Scotland, or Wales, or the lakes. Something for everyone. A bacon butty and a mug of tea in the site cafe. Walk through the site gate and you are immediately climbing into the high fells or taking a gentle stroll into the countryside. A well run site with dedicated and enthusiastic staff.

A small site high up in the Pennines.

This review is for Crowden

A small site high up in the Pennines. The A628 access is OK but the A6024 over the top of Holme Moss to Holmfirth is narrow & twisty. We had a good meal at the Ford Inn, just outside Holmfirth but the access is not easy for a campervan - bad hairpin junction in Holmfirth or very narrow back roads.

We stayed here for two nights on our way home from touring Scotland, we really wished we'd had longer here, it's in a great location, with brilliant walks/cycling on the doorstep, the pizza's made on site are delicious (get your orders in early as they sell out!) There is a lovely little wooded area with a couple of rope swings that our children loved, the toilets/showers were always clean & the wardens were friendly & helpful.
