Overview

A secluded campsite in rural Essex, near both the coast and the city.

Our pretty Kelvedon Hatch Club campsite in the heart of leafy Essex serves those campers seeking the excitement and attractions of the capital as well as those looking for a relaxing break on the Essex coast.

This 90-pitch campsite is secluded and peaceful and has a really rural feel. All forms of camping is catered for here with a range of facilities including a parent and child room, children’s play area and an excellent dog walk.

The pretty village of Kelvedon Hatch – best known for its once-secret nuclear bunker, now a museum, is close by. Also close is Brentwood, with Mountnessing Windmill – a restored, working post mill – and Old MacDonald’s Farm, a leisure park aimed at children. You can also catch a train from the town to London – buses to the station stop half a mile from site with trains leaving every 10 minutes to the city.

For some beach action, head to Southend. Three Shells, the town’s most central beach, offers easy access to Adventure Island, the Pier and numerous shops, cafes and amusements. Also try the Blue Flag, dog-friendly Canvey Island Beach in the Thames Estuary and the Blue Flag Sandy Shoebury East and Shoeburyness Beaches.

I was sorry I could not stay longer than 2 nights at this little gem! Not far from London, yet you are deep in the countryside. There are excellent safe walks nearby with little road walking. I enjoyed brambling and found wild currants. There is a feeling of space on the site. I understand that the facilities are being completely revamped. The bunker is worth a visit and you are not far from London via train. Please don't all rush to book - leave room for me!

Ignore the negative comments elsewhere in the reviews, the site is in a nice peaceful location close to London with site staff (particularly Ralph & Irene) very friendly & helpful. Like most CCC sites if the sun shines all is O.K, if it rains it will be muddy! There is a downside in that the toilet/shower facilities need re-building but I understand planning permission is being sought for this - CCC - please get a move on once it is approved!

We arrived at Kelvedon Hatch campsite after dark.

We arrived at Kelvedon Hatch campsite after dark. It was completely black and we unfortunately backed our caravan into a tree while parking it. The warden (Paul) was very helpful and assisted us to get parked safely. The club were great following our accident and drafted a great report and checked with us a couple of times to make sure we were all OK. The site has 2 main fields with the pitches mainly around the edges. The services are located in the centre of the fields with the toilet block between the two fields. There is a one way system in place and it was safe for our children to play and we could see them at all times. The toilet blocks were always clean and although we didn't use the showers they also looked clean and there was always showers available. The toilet block was cleaned in the morning from around 11am for an hour or so when the disabled facilities were available for the toilet. The chemical point is quite high meaning you have to lift your waste container up to empty it but it wasn't too much trouble and there was a hose for cleaning up. The site itself is very quiet and in a nice location. There's a small play area for the kids with just a couple of swings and a slide but not much else. There's some great things to do nearby. We visited The Gruffalo Trail at Thorndon Country Park. Brentwood has a nice high street and there's plenty of places to eat. If you like fish and chips Chris' Fish and Chips on the A128 near Brentwood is great. The drive in wasn't difficult but from the A12 we had to drive up the Brentwood High Street which seemed a little strange in a caravan and there was a fair bit of start stop. There might be a better route but I didn't find one. Overall we really liked Kelvedon Hatch. The wardens were brilliant and the site seemed well looked after. Despite having a mishap with a tree we had a great time and will definitely be back.

We booked this site as it was close to the area we had lived many years ago and we wished to stay in the area to visit family and take a tour around parts of Essex. We weren't disappointed. The wardens were very friendly and helpful. The site was beautifully laid out surrounded by mature trees. The toilet block was dated by well maintained and always clean with plenty of hot water, soap and toilet rolls. The directions and brown signs to find the site were very good although the final turn could be little tight for a larger vehicle. We thorougtly enjoyed our stay and hope to return
