Overview

A secluded campsite in rural Essex, near both the coast and the city.

Our pretty Kelvedon Hatch Club campsite in the heart of leafy Essex serves those campers seeking the excitement and attractions of the capital as well as those looking for a relaxing break on the Essex coast.

This 90-pitch campsite is secluded and peaceful and has a really rural feel. All forms of camping is catered for here with a range of facilities including a parent and child room, children’s play area and an excellent dog walk.

The pretty village of Kelvedon Hatch – best known for its once-secret nuclear bunker, now a museum, is close by. Also close is Brentwood, with Mountnessing Windmill – a restored, working post mill – and Old MacDonald’s Farm, a leisure park aimed at children. You can also catch a train from the town to London – buses to the station stop half a mile from site with trains leaving every 10 minutes to the city.

For some beach action, head to Southend. Three Shells, the town’s most central beach, offers easy access to Adventure Island, the Pier and numerous shops, cafes and amusements. Also try the Blue Flag, dog-friendly Canvey Island Beach in the Thames Estuary and the Blue Flag Sandy Shoebury East and Shoeburyness Beaches.

First time we have stayed there as we moved from area and needed to visit old friends. Close to Brentwood which is quite vibrant now and Ongar has a charm. Both with big Sainsburys stores. Ongar Garden centre quite close. Plenty of pubs in area but really need some form of transport. Easy to drive to BR station in Brentwood or Epping for Underground. Also easy to get to M25 and then Lakeside. Lovely new Toilet block, very large disabled and family rooms. Only downside was the shower push control seemed to last just 10 seconds and the water pressure in sink taps very high so the water shot out of sink and drowned me and the floor. Snagging problems hopefully!

I pre-booked on line but the booking site seemed to indicate that only grass with no electric was available. But I was able to pay the difference on arrival to get what I actually wanted. There is a new facilities block which is very smart but unfortunately has lead to replacement of the previous very good showers with inferior ones that need continuous button pressing.

Not being accustomed to aircraft noise it became a bit of a nuisance.

Not being accustomed to aircraft noise it became a bit of a nuisance. It was not constant 24/7 but for several hours at a time a number of times during day & night. When wind changed it became the take off route with accompanying roar instead of a continuous whine. The site itself consists of three fields, one with play area, one with more sun early morning and the other being sunnier in afternoon. Slightly sloping (sideways) hardstandings, easier to get level on grass pitches as can face any direction. Facilities block first class. A lovely site except for aircraft noise.
