Linger a while on this friendly campsite in southern Scotland.

Moffat will be closed from 18th January 2015 until 13th March 2015 due to site redevelopment works.

Moffat is our Club campsite in the Scottish lowlands. It’s an ideal stopping off point for journeys through Scotland. This pretty Victorian Spa town is just three minutes off the M74. But Moffat is much more than just a pit stop, its idyllic location more than warrants a longer stay.

The 180-pitch Moffat campsite boasts a fine setting in a wide valley surrounded by magnificent scenery. The well laid out site has a good range of well-placed facilities catering for all campers needs.

If you choose to linger a little longer in the area, the town of Moffat is a great place to start your exploration. Just a five minute walk from the campsite, the town boasts one of the broadest high streets in Scotland. Here you'll find the fountain topped by the statue of Colvin Ram, the famous Moffat Toffee Shop and the Star Hotel which appears in the Guinness Book of Records as the narrowest hotel in the world. Moffat also offers a variety of shopping including a weekly market on Fridays and a monthly producers market.

Nearby Station Park offers a  variety of attractions including a boating lake and gardens. Next to the campsite the Hammerlands Centre has a garden centre, cafe and fishery.

The town holds an annual walking festival in October and from the campsite you can access some of the finest hilwalking in the south of Scotland. Also close by is the Grey Mares Tail, a magnificent waterfalldropping 200ft from Loch Skene.

There are also a number of historic houses and castles in the area. Drumlanrig Castle near Thornhill - Scotland’s oldest inhabited house - contains artwork by Rembrandt and Da Vinci and has wonderful landscaped gardens and woods. Medieval  Caerlaverock Castle is located close to nearby  Dumfries.

A very friendly greeting from the site managers but our experience was let down by the new shower block which has fundamental design faults. There are a number of wash basins which are all so close together that there is nowhere to put your toilet bag. The ladies only has two private cubicles for washing - not enough, and they have not provided any showers with a movable shower head. The worst feature though is the drain that is supposed to catch all the water from the shower has been put in so close to the shower head that most of the water goes over the top of it and runs into the middle of the shower block. Expect to get your shoes and trousers wet if you go for a shower. in addition the curtains have also been put really close to the shower so there is hardly any room to move around. All we want from a site is a quiet pitch with good facilities so I am afraid this site falls down on one of the basics. We found the site to be quiet (we stayed on a Friday night) but do be aware that the rebuilt Moffat Academy (2010) overlooks the site and we could not see any evidence of planting to screen the site from the school so there may be a noise issue during term time.

Although the shower blocks are now bright and modern the actual showers are very disappointing.

Although the shower blocks are now bright and modern the actual showers are very disappointing. The cubicles are very small with not much room to move. There would not be enough room for a parent and child. The drying area soon gets wet from the shower leaving no dry space to get dried. The floor slopes away from the drain causing the water from the shower to go under the cubicle door and collect in the centre aisle so you not only have to mop the shower but the aisle as well.

We made an over-night stop at Moffat on our way up to the Isle of Mull. We just arrived on spec with no booking and were made most welcome by the wardens. The site facilities block was not open due to an unfortunate delay in building completion but this did not trouble us as we were only staying one night. By way of compensation we were offered a 10% refund. The site was immaculate with many improvements to the paths and grounds. The wardens offered a wealth of information about the lovely town of Moffat and surrounding countryside and we would certainly recommend this site for a handy stopover or indeed a relaxing longer break.
