Linger a while on this friendly campsite in southern Scotland.

Moffat is our Club campsite in the Scottish lowlands. It’s an ideal stopping off point for journeys through Scotland. This pretty Victorian Spa town is just three minutes off the M74. But Moffat is much more than just a pit stop, its idyllic location more than warrants a longer stay.

The 180-pitch Moffat campsite boasts a fine setting in a wide valley surrounded by magnificent scenery. The well laid out site has a good range of well-placed facilities catering for all campers needs.

If you choose to linger a little longer in the area, the town of Moffat is a great place to start your exploration. Just a five minute walk from the campsite, the town boasts one of the broadest high streets in Scotland. Here you'll find the fountain topped by the statue of Colvin Ram, the famous Moffat Toffee Shop and the Star Hotel which appears in the Guinness Book of Records as the narrowest hotel in the world. Moffat also offers a variety of shopping including a weekly market on Fridays and a monthly producers market.

Nearby Station Park offers a  variety of attractions including a boating lake and gardens. Next to the campsite the Hammerlands Centre has a garden centre, cafe and fishery.

The town holds an annual walking festival in October and from the campsite you can access some of the finest hilwalking in the south of Scotland. Also close by is the Grey Mares Tail, a magnificent waterfalldropping 200ft from Loch Skene.

There are also a number of historic houses and castles in the area. Drumlanrig Castle near Thornhill - Scotland’s oldest inhabited house - contains artwork by Rembrandt and Da Vinci and has wonderful landscaped gardens and woods. Medieval  Caerlaverock Castle is located close to nearby  Dumfries.

I'm glad we booked as the site was absolutely full, but despite this the facilities were all immaculate. The staff were very friendly and helpful, despite the fact that they were all working so hard to keep up with arrivals. They even had time to cheerfully answer my questions about 5th wheelers! A very well run and pleasant site. There is however one serious problem - the approach road. It is in serious need of resurfacing. I know that it doesn't belong to the club but the condition is really bad with many large (several inches deep) potholes. The wardens did tell me that the club are looking into the problem.

We have been visiting Moffat for years and when we first started and up to 2/3 years ago, you were always given a loving welcome and the staff went about the site with smiles on their faces. However, something for the worst changed a couple of years ago, and the people running the site were, in my opinion, in the wrong jobs. They did not seem to like face to face interface with the public. For example, when you went into the office to arrive, no good afternoon etc, 'membership cards', no please. Moreover, they did not take into any consideration people's requests. However, that is in the past and Moffat is back to being a wonderful, cheerful place with great people running the site. A nice welcome, requests taken into consideration and any time you met them a nice wave or smile. They obviously enjoy their jobs, which when you are involved with the public is absolutely necessary. Thanks very much to all of them. However, Moffat still has one problem; the new showers in the totally refurbished toilet block. Someone decided to make all the showers 'wet rooms', unfortunately they forgot about putting a gradient into the floors to allow water to move towards the drain. A fix was attempted by putting the shower heads on the side of the cubicle rather than on the back wall. That has solved the problem of the water going into the corridor BUT it has now created a more serious issue. The water from each shower now moves sideways on the shower floor and passes into both adjacent shower cubicles. This means you are now standing in someone else's dirty water; this is unhygienic and needs to be sorted urgently. Moreover, when you leave the cubicle and mop and dry your cubicle, the water is also in both adjacent cubicles. Short of ripping up the floor and putting a proper gradient in, the only solution is to install shower trays. I know it is difficult for people to own up to 'cock-ups' but this needs to be done.

Easy walking access to the town and all its eating and drinking venues.

This review is for Moffat

Easy walking access to the town and all its eating and drinking venues. Pitches are a little restricted such that you may need to drive over the grass. Staff on site very friendly and helpful. Worst condition is the access road - don't travel it at more than 5 MPH or all of your cupboards will be empty - it is in desperate need of resurfacing.
