Linger a while on this friendly campsite in southern Scotland.

Moffat will be closed from 18th January 2015 until 13th March 2015 due to site redevelopment works.

Moffat is our Club campsite in the Scottish lowlands. It’s an ideal stopping off point for journeys through Scotland. This pretty Victorian Spa town is just three minutes off the M74. But Moffat is much more than just a pit stop, its idyllic location more than warrants a longer stay.

The 180-pitch Moffat campsite boasts a fine setting in a wide valley surrounded by magnificent scenery. The well laid out site has a good range of well-placed facilities catering for all campers needs.

If you choose to linger a little longer in the area, the town of Moffat is a great place to start your exploration. Just a five minute walk from the campsite, the town boasts one of the broadest high streets in Scotland. Here you'll find the fountain topped by the statue of Colvin Ram, the famous Moffat Toffee Shop and the Star Hotel which appears in the Guinness Book of Records as the narrowest hotel in the world. Moffat also offers a variety of shopping including a weekly market on Fridays and a monthly producers market.

Nearby Station Park offers a  variety of attractions including a boating lake and gardens. Next to the campsite the Hammerlands Centre has a garden centre, cafe and fishery.

The town holds an annual walking festival in October and from the campsite you can access some of the finest hilwalking in the south of Scotland. Also close by is the Grey Mares Tail, a magnificent waterfalldropping 200ft from Loch Skene.

There are also a number of historic houses and castles in the area. Drumlanrig Castle near Thornhill - Scotland’s oldest inhabited house - contains artwork by Rembrandt and Da Vinci and has wonderful landscaped gardens and woods. Medieval  Caerlaverock Castle is located close to nearby  Dumfries.

We love Moffat, the site and town, and always use it as a stopover to/from rest of Scotland. Our stays have varied between 2 days to 12 days. It is easily reached from the M74 and is a good base for touring Dumfries & Galloway and the Border country. Glasgow and Edinburgh are an hour to hour and half drive away. Alternatively there are bus services from the town to both cities. Fares are reasonable (English bus passes cannot be used). The town has a good selection of hotels and restaurants. Next door to the site is Moffat Woollen Mills and a Co-op supermarket. Spectacular scenery at the Grey Mare's Tail waterfall is a short drive from the site. The site facilities are always spotless but looking dated, but I see from other comments that refurbishment is planned early in 2015.

We have stayed at this site many times as it is ideally located in the Town of Moffat. The staff are fantastic and nothing is a bother to them. the site is ideal to park the car and everything is within walking distance of the site. Moffat has some fantastic restaurants and Hotels for a meal or drink to unwind after a busy week. We have heard that the site will close for refurbishment to the toilet block and this will be a welcome improvement. The site is a credit to the club and the staff, keep up the good work.
