Linger a while on this friendly campsite in southern Scotland.

Moffat will be closed from 18th January 2015 until 13th March 2015 due to site redevelopment works.

Moffat is our Club campsite in the Scottish lowlands. It’s an ideal stopping off point for journeys through Scotland. This pretty Victorian Spa town is just three minutes off the M74. But Moffat is much more than just a pit stop, its idyllic location more than warrants a longer stay.

The 180-pitch Moffat campsite boasts a fine setting in a wide valley surrounded by magnificent scenery. The well laid out site has a good range of well-placed facilities catering for all campers needs.

If you choose to linger a little longer in the area, the town of Moffat is a great place to start your exploration. Just a five minute walk from the campsite, the town boasts one of the broadest high streets in Scotland. Here you'll find the fountain topped by the statue of Colvin Ram, the famous Moffat Toffee Shop and the Star Hotel which appears in the Guinness Book of Records as the narrowest hotel in the world. Moffat also offers a variety of shopping including a weekly market on Fridays and a monthly producers market.

Nearby Station Park offers a  variety of attractions including a boating lake and gardens. Next to the campsite the Hammerlands Centre has a garden centre, cafe and fishery.

The town holds an annual walking festival in October and from the campsite you can access some of the finest hilwalking in the south of Scotland. Also close by is the Grey Mares Tail, a magnificent waterfalldropping 200ft from Loch Skene.

There are also a number of historic houses and castles in the area. Drumlanrig Castle near Thornhill - Scotland’s oldest inhabited house - contains artwork by Rembrandt and Da Vinci and has wonderful landscaped gardens and woods. Medieval  Caerlaverock Castle is located close to nearby  Dumfries.

We arrived at 7pm on Good Friday and were shown to the last available pitch by one of the wardens. The pitch was hardstanding and level so we soon set up our unit and walked into the town for a drink in one of the many pubs. The toilet block has recently been refurbished to a very high standard; the wardens were extremely helpful and the site shop was good value for money. The co-operative food store was also brilliant and only a two minute walk away. We had previously used the site as a stopover en-route to Oban but I would recommend staying there for at least 3 nights.

We always enjoy our visits to Moffat and this was no exception.

We always enjoy our visits to Moffat and this was no exception. The staff are super efficient and very friendly and welcoming. Get you settled into your pitch and leave you alone for the rest of your stay; excellent. The new toilet blocks are disappointing. Yes, they are a great improvement on the previous one, but that would not be difficult. However, as an ex project manager, I would have the contractors back in to sort the shower floors. The slope on the shower floors goes in the wrong direction with water flowing into the main corridor instead of down the drain. Prior to this refurbishment, I suggested to the C&CC that the designer visits some other sites with good toilet blocks, obviously this did not happen. Ideal, would be sink and shower cubicles in one area and the WCs in another. It is not nice having a shower when someone is getting rid of last nights Indian!! I do not see the need for all the sinks in the urinal area, other sites manage with 2 or 3; that is a waste of space. That said, I am sure the draining a sloping floor problems will be sorted. It took nothing away from our enjoyable visit though, a lovely site and lovely area. Thanks

We have recently made our first visit to Moffat since the re-opening of the site.

We have recently made our first visit to Moffat since the re-opening of the site. We have waited 20 years for these refurbishments, see our last review on page 34. We are very pleased with the new shower block. At the time of our visit there was still some tweaking to be done which will complete a good job. Overall it is a vast improvement on what was there before. We are also pleased to see that the internal roads have been upgraded. The managers and team are excellent as usual and we are looking forward to our next visit.
