    Site within National Park

There are glorious views of Dartmoor National Park from this lovely Devon campsite.

Fabulous views and numerous walking and cycling opportunities await those camping at our lovely Tavistock Club Site. This pretty site lies on the central western boundary of the stunning Dartmoor National Park.

This spacious campsite accommodates up to 80 units and has modern facilities including individual shower rooms with toilet and sink, disabled facilities and a laundry and washing up area. As well as the many dog walking opportunities off-site, there are two large enclosed dog walks on site.

Tavistock, 2 ½ miles from the site, has world heritage status. It is a picturesque and ancient Stannary and market town with the beautiful River Tavy running through its centre. Whether you enjoy lovely cafes and shops or grand architecture and historical abbey ruins, it is well worth a visit.

Leave your car on site and venture on foot or two wheels and explore Dartmoor’s sweeping hills and wooded valleys. The National Cycle Route number 27 (coast to coast Ilfracombe to Plymouth) passes 200 yards from the site.

A good place to start your visit to Dartmoor is the National Park Visitor Centre at Princetown, east of Tavistock campsite. Displays and exhibitions give a wonderful insight into the history, culture and wildlife of the area. Princetown also offers excellent access to the north and south moors for hill walkers.

The beautiful village of Sheepstor south-east of Tavistock campsite is where Stephen Spielberg’s Warhorse was filmed, while north of the campsite, Lydford boasts a castle and the stunning Lydford Gorge which stretches for one and a half miles from the Devil’s Cauldron whirlpool to the 100ft Whitelady Waterfall.

Ready Camp is available at this campsite. (Please note that, although we welcome dogs on this site, in the interest of all guests we do not permit pets to stay within the Ready Camp tents).

Site immaculately clean with good dog walking area and pleasantly laid out. Seems strange everyone pitched on grass patch in middle of park could drive tent pegs into the grass, but we couldn't use the grass next to our hard standing. We like to restrict our dogs view so they don't bark at others walking by. Were told the grass patches between hard standings were there as a fire break but never had this before. I understand you have to leave minimum distances between campers but seems ridiculous to not be able to use some of the grass patch! We stayed 2 nights with a motorhome and we usually then leave the van in situ walking everywhere. This isn't really the site to come to without a car as you really need to drive at least a mile or two before you can walk on Dartmoor, or to get to a pub or to any villages nearby. Also the B road outside is very busy so not a road you want to walk along with dogs or as pedestrians as no pavements. With a car though or v active on your bikes (plenty of hills) it's a good base to use for touring or sightseeing. Shower block has the biggest roomiest shower cubicles with loo and washbasin combined that we ever seen.

Having a toilet, washbasin and shower in one private cubicle is lovely for the user but not when site is busy and there are queues. If there were separate cubicles for each then someone could use washbasin cubicle while someone else is in shower while someone else uses toilet. As it is queues are created and only one facility can be used instead of 3 at same time. Also there would be room for more showers and washbasins if cubicles were made smaller. Very clean though.

We had arrived at Plymouth on the ferry from Spain and always choose Tavistock as our first port of call in England. The Wardens are aware of the vagaries of the ferry docking times and experience and accept that we could be late checking in. No matter what the situation they go out of their way to accomodate campers and help sort out their problems. The ambience of the site is calm, friendly and sociable which encourages the campers to be neighbourly. Even in bad weather the site is attractive and has a semi wild Dartmoor experience. One day we hope to stay longer and explore wider afield.
