Overview

    Site within National Park

There are glorious views of Dartmoor National Park from this lovely Devon campsite.

Fabulous views and numerous walking and cycling opportunities await those camping at our lovely Tavistock Club Site. This pretty site lies on the central western boundary of the stunning Dartmoor National Park.

This spacious campsite accommodates up to 80 units and has modern facilities including individual shower rooms with toilet and sink, disabled facilities and a laundry and washing up area. As well as the many dog walking opportunities off-site, there are two large enclosed dog walks on site.

Tavistock, 2 ½ miles from the site, has world heritage status. It is a picturesque and ancient Stannary and market town with the beautiful River Tavy running through its centre. Whether you enjoy lovely cafes and shops or grand architecture and historical abbey ruins, it is well worth a visit.

Leave your car on site and venture on foot or two wheels and explore Dartmoor’s sweeping hills and wooded valleys. The National Cycle Route number 27 (coast to coast Ilfracombe to Plymouth) passes 200 yards from the site.

A good place to start your visit to Dartmoor is the National Park Visitor Centre at Princetown, east of Tavistock campsite. Displays and exhibitions give a wonderful insight into the history, culture and wildlife of the area. Princetown also offers excellent access to the north and south moors for hill walkers.

The beautiful village of Sheepstor south-east of Tavistock campsite is where Stephen Spielberg’s Warhorse was filmed, while north of the campsite, Lydford boasts a castle and the stunning Lydford Gorge which stretches for one and a half miles from the Devil’s Cauldron whirlpool to the 100ft Whitelady Waterfall.

Ready Camp is available at this campsite. (Please note that, although we welcome dogs on this site, in the interest of all guests we do not permit pets to stay within the Ready Camp tents).

Try the Peter Tavy Inn for good beer and good food.

This review is for Tavistock

Try the Peter Tavy Inn for good beer and good food. Black Bean sauce at the Cantonese Kitchen take away is superb. Both Chinese Take aways in Tavistock are good. Have a go at gliding with he Dartmoor Gliding Society, only 15-20 minutes drive from the site, weekends and Wednesdays.

I have given a 4 for facilities only because there is no grey water dump facility.

This review is for Tavistock

I have given a 4 for facilities only because there is no grey water dump facility. The pitch was level although some need levelling blocks. Electricity worked well and other facilities were clean and tidy. Within the Dartmoor National Park, there is plenty to do and see. I would go back.

An equally perfect "base-camp" or "stay and relax" site that has an excellent internal layout...

This review is for Tavistock

An equally perfect "base-camp" or "stay and relax" site that has an excellent internal layout and is beautifully maintained. Judged against most sites the road access from Tavistock is an easy journey up the B3357 against which the site sits. The scale of the site makes for a very comfortable stay and is well screened by surrounding hedges and trees. The very carefully maintained feel of the camping areas continues through into the excellent nature and dog walking routes. On-site vehicle routes are short between access and egress points. For campers who prefer to leave their vehicles on-site as much as possible the site is served with an adjacent bus stop which connects to very good services centralised at the Tavistock bus station. For journeys on foot some of the westerly Tors of Dartmoor are within good walking distance from the site as is Whitchurch Down and indeed Tavistock itself. A leisurely day (or two) can easily be spent wandering down into Tavistock via Whitchurch Down on foot with plenty to see and do in the town and many convenient places to eat. The possibilities for days out further afield are plentiful and encouraged by the well stocked Information room on-site. It is, perhaps, on your return from days out that the site can be most appreciated though for it's tidiness, layout and very well maintained appearance. These factors just engender relaxation and making the most of the sheltered feel of the location. Perhaps most important of all though was how genuinely helpful and friendly I found the site manging team to be both when booking our pitch and during our stay.
