If you’re planning to explore the northern Lakes, our Keswick Club campsite on the shores of Derwentwater is hard to beat as a base for your explorations.

The site boasts a prime location in the north of the Lake District with stunning views extending over the lake to the hills beyond. Keswick is an organised campsite with good facilities – showers, toilets, washing up area, a laundry and a new backpacker room, particularly useful for those arriving on foot or by bike. Keswick town is within walking distance and ticks all the boxes for provisions, outdoor gear, eating and drinking.

Whether you’re a stroller, a rambler, a high-level walker or prefer to see the sights on two wheels, you can take your pick from numerous lake- and hillside tracks and trails easily accessible from Keswick campsite. Skiddaw is also easily reached from site. And, with Derwentwater so close at hand there’s no shortage of water-based activities to dip into. This stretch of water is popular for canoeing and kayaking. For a small fee you can launch directly from the Sites shoreline.

Fishing can be enjoyed on the lake too. Try the eastern shore or hire a boat from one of the marinas and head to the centre of the lake to catch pike, bream and trout.

For a less energetic way to enjoy the water and the views board one of the motor launches which operate around the lake and offer several drop off points.

At the southern end of Derwentwater is the beautiful valley of Borrowdale where you’ll find the Neolithic Castlerigg Stone Circle and the medieval and much photographed pack horse bridge at Ashness.

Worth Noting

Due to the possibility of Site flooding all units must have a tow vehicle on site overnight. There may be restrictions on pitch availability and use of awnings. If you have more than one car or are visiting the site you may be asked to park off-site.

100% coverage cannot be guaranteed due to rural location, weather conditions and changing flora. These can cause variable signal strength. Hotspots are available.

Eat Local

There is a farmers' market in Keswick on Thursdays and Saturdays.

We recently stayed for 8 nights from 29th July - 6th August at Keswick and had a truly superb holiday. On arrival we were met by a very friendly team who booked us in and then showed us to our pitch. This was our first trip to Keswick and we were very lucky to get one of the best pitches available right in front of the lake which made a great start to our holiday. The scenery at Keswick is absolutely breath-taking and although the weather was not so kind to us on this occasion there is so much to do and see this really did not affect us. There are great facilities on the site, the grounds are pretty and very well kept, the modern shower blocks are kept immaculately clean at all times. There is a laundry, back packers kitchen 2 camping pods with their own BBQ,s too. The staff are very approachable, knowledgeable and friendly. A nice little touch is the herb garden outside the reception with a sign saying help yourselves to herbs from the garden. We walked up Cat Bells on one of the better days and the view from the top was amazing. The town centre is just a 5 minute walk away as are 2 supermarkets stocking everything needed, Boothes is the bigger one but there is also the Co-op. There are many great eating places, pubs etc in the town and market days on Thursday and Saturday. There are lots of great walks around Keswick so there is plenty to do and see. We enjoyed sitting by the lake in the evening taking in the views, thinking about the day enjoying a beverage and watching our lovely Labrador dog happily playing and swimming in the lake very relaxing. This is a great site for everyone from back packers, to families camping or caravanning and for all generations. We had a great holiday and will definately be returning again next year.

Fantastic location. Now predominantly "hard" gravel-surfaced pitches.

Fantastic location. Now predominantly "hard" gravel-surfaced pitches. this driven by demand (since its on a flood plain), but makes the site seem very congested. Most previous grassed areas now gravelled, which compromises some of the views lake area. We use this site for watersports access. Fees for launching seem very high in proportion to the facilities, but this may be associated with local tax regime. "Beach" area would benefit hugely from removal of significant sharp rock/boulder removal (major launching hazard) and/or a suitable jetty. Washing-up facilities enhanced by the addition of draft-reducing twin-walled sheeting. Access to the site prone to blockage at peak arrival, but has been enhanced over recent years by introduction of a one-way system and new lighting. (Which curiously only start half way down the road?!). Well maintained site. For preference, I would like to remove all the bulbs in the power-supply "daleks" to reduce perennial background light and enhance the night sky views, which would be otherwise fantastic. No doubt these have been installed due to H&S issues or complaints about getting to the loos at night? Maybe a compromise with red lighting would be possible?

A site where my family and I have returned year after year.

This review is for Keswick

A site where my family and I have returned year after year. We have looked at others, even discussed 'defecting', but keep coming back because no other site can provide what Keswick CCC does. It's not a heavily regimented, characterless, identikit 'Travelodge' style site. The users are a great cross section of society and we've made both short and long term friendships with lots of fellow users. As regular attenders of the Keswick Convention we find it ideal for access to the venues, and it's right next to the Rugby Club for the Convention minibus service. Booths is handy for shopping and there's no site closer to the centre of town than the 3 CCC sites here. You have a beach to access the lake, for boating, kayaking, paddle boarding or just plain swimming. The wash blocks and other amenities are heavily used but well maintained, and if you find a problem, a courteous and sympathetic mention of it to a staff member gets it speedily dealt with. (I haven't tried being surly and demanding!) The number of hardstanding pitches has greatly increased, which the staff say is to increase the chances of people being able to stay when the wet weather goes on and on (this IS the Lake District) and not to exclude tenters. Choose your pitch wisely (get there in good time) with a view to its drainage, and unless the lake comes up to join the action, you'll be fine. Using any sort of waterproof groundsheet on the hardstanding will mean putting a protective layer or two underneath. The foam mesh sheets are ideal. DON'T use a simple vinyl groundsheet unprotected. You'll definitely hole it and get water in. You may get away with it with more robust materials. We keep a sheet of vinyl flooring in the caravan to put under the awning liner. So long as you recognise the location (just 5 miles from the wettest place in in England) and plan your equipment and outfits accordingly, and treat staff and campers with decent respect, you'll have a grand stay on this cracking site.
