Pitch on the shores of Lake Windermere and explore the southern Lakes from this site.

Braithwaite Fold campsite sits on the eastern shore of Lake Windermere in the heart of the beautiful Lake District and is a stone’s throw from the linked towns of Bowness and Windermere.

Our compact site has 66 level hardstanding with electric hook up pitches – and is well laid out. There are modern facilities including an undercover washing up area, laundry and disabled facilities. 3 grass pitches for tents only.

Pitch here and you won’t be short of things to do. For starters you can enjoy the many attractions of the lake right from the campsite. Enjoy a steam cruise or have a go at dinghy sailing, power boating or windsurfing. Meet Peter Rabbit and friends at the World of Beatrix Potter in Bowness on Windermere.

Catch the chain ferry to the western shore for the National Trust’s Claife Heights, ideal for walking and cycling, the pretty village of Hawkshead - home to Hill Top where Beatrix Potter once lived - and Grizedale Forest Park with its Go Ape high wire adventure area.

Fell Foot Park at the lake’s southern tip is perfect for picnics and paddling. Near here you’ll also find the Lakeside and Haverthwaite steam railway and the Lakes Aquarium.

Worth Noting

This site can only accommodate one car per pitch at all times. If you have more than one car or you are a visiting the camp site you will have to park your car in the pay and display next door to the site.

Stayed here recently for 3 nights. Arrival is strict 1pm and very organised and friendly. We were given a choice of pitches and were very happy. Small site, all hard standing and layed out very well. Facilities block small but always very clean. Covered over washing up area and information hut. Short walk into Bowness via pubs and shops or you can take the little train from the car park right outside the site! Plenty to see and do in Bowness, from boats to walks and lots more. Numerous boat trips on offer. We caught a boat to Ambleside for a walk around and then back again. Lots of places to eat and drink. Can recommend the food in the Albert and if you like Chinese food you'll be in heaven, it seems like every other restaurant is Chinese! Out of the back gate of the site is the car/passenger ferry across the lake to Hawkshead. 50p per person each way. Nice walks around Claife over that side too. All in all a great site and well worth a visit.

We picked this site to explore a part of the lake District we hadn't really visited before. What a gem the site is, it was perfect for our needs, ferries/cruises and buses on the door step enabled many walks and visits to many areas without having to drive. Highly recommend the various cruises up and down the lake. Bowness has many shops, cafes and eateries to cater for many tastes. We hope to visit again. And we were blessed with good weather-always a bonus!

Suggest a drying room would be very useful on site.

Suggest a drying room would be very useful on site. Plenty of hot water, showers good, washing up area good, Good access to popular destinations, but if looking for somewhere peaceful perhaps not ideal as Bowness is extremely busy. Bus service good if not wanting to drive. Cycling on western side of lake Windermere is delightful, take the car ferry across lake, up to Wray Castle mostly traffic free and then on into Hawshead, returning via lake Esthwaite. Conniston a good destination on rainy day, very helpful people in tourist information office, and spend some time in the Ruskin Museum.
