A wonderfully secluded campsite hidden in the Welsh hills.

Rhandirmwyn (pronounced ran-dee-mo-n) Club campsite lies just outside the Brecon Beacons National Park. The name means ‘Valley of the minerals’ and is a lead mining area in the Towy Valley.

The campsite is situated in the middle of the valley and the lively River Towy run alongside it. The campsite is spacious and well set out with excellent facilities. Surrounded by hills and trees it’s ideal for families or individuals interested in walking, cycling or just relaxing.

There are many beautiful hill and river walks within easy reach of this campsite. The Cambrian Way passes through the edge of the site. The circular all-ability access trail in Cwmrhaeadr Forest, one-and-a-half miles from the campsite is perfect for cyclists. There are two nice pubs in the village, your reward for completing the steep climb up to them!

Head south from the campsite to the Usk reservoir in the National Park. An eight-mile trail wends its way around the shore. Fishing is available here too. The nearby Glasfyndd Forest also has great walking and cycling tracks.

Llyn Brianne reservoir is also worth a visit. The road around the reservoir has some breathtaking views. Also visit the subterreanean world of the National Showcaves Centre for Wales. As well as the caves you can visit the dinosaur park, shire horse centre and the Iron Age village. The 13th century hillside Carreg Cenne Castle is south of the campsite near the village of Trapp.

Don’t miss a visit to the RSPB Dinas Nature Reserve where you can spot red kites. You can see more red kites as well as ravens and buzzards at Gigrin Farm Bird reserve in the market town of Rhayader.

Let's get the negatives over first! The club site info states this is a top site for cycling, not in our opinion due to the very hilly and single track roads that surround the site. Those same narrow roads do need to be treated with respect when towing either arriving or leaving! As for everything else it was extremely good. From the warm welcome to the pristine facilities, well maintained pitches and peaceful tranquil surroundings we found it to be one of the best sites we have visited. The nearest pub was fine despite the hill getting there but the other pub near the Towie Bridge was much friendlier and when the new owners have got everything in place it will be the place to go! We visited Cardigan bay (New Quay) and went on a dolphin watch boat trip which was very reasonable. We also visited Brecon, the Gower Peninsular and the Gold Mines. All in all a very good time and we will be back, but without our bikes.

The nicest campsite we have been to. Barry and Wendy are great at their jobs.

The nicest campsite we have been to. Barry and Wendy are great at their jobs. Friendly and helpful but never intrusive. The shower block is very clean, showers are not the annoying push button things and the water was always hot and temperature never fluctuated. Bin area was kept clean and emptied regularly and the whole site was pristine. There are various walks from the campsite and the roads are very quiet so it's no hardship walking along them. The countryside around is so very beautiful you don't need to go too far. The furthest we went was to the Elan Valley which is stunning but closer to the campsite is Llyn Brianne reservoir which is worth spending a day driving/cycling/walking around. The mountain road from there is stunning. The local pub, The Royal Oak is friendly and serves good food. Dogs are welcome there as are walkers in wet clothes and boots, yes, that was us. Vegetarians are catered for too and there was a children's menu. We will definitely be going back to the area and one day may not leave.

“Yet another fabulous weeks holiday at this superb site. Friendly welcome from the wardens who maintain the site to a remarkable standard. The scenery is absolutely stunning and there are some fabulous walks along the river Towy in both directions as well as some more strenuous ones. Can highly recommend this site for anybody who appreciates nature and beautiful scenery. We will definitely be returning.”
