Overview

Explore the university city of Cambridge and its surrounding Fenland landscape from here.

South Cambridgeshire is ideal walking and cycling country – a tranquil and rural landscape interdispersed with gentle rolling hills, beech woods and flat fertile land.

The Club’s pretty Cambridge campsite at Great Shelford, offers an ideal base to explore the area. This level campsite, bordered by trees is just four miles south of the cosmopolitan city of Cambridge.

In addition to its famous university the city offers a range of attractions including museums, art venues, restaurants and bars. Discover the city on foot – there are many walking tours on offer – or take your bike and enjoy the many cycle routes around the city. Further afield the Fens are a pleasant place to spend an afternoon in the saddle with its flat terrain and quaint towns and villages.

During the summer months Cambridge hosts a mezzé of al fresco performances of music in the parks and green spaces as part of the annual Summer in the City programme of events. July sees the city come alive as the Folk Festival takes over and in September the city’s Art Picturehouse hosts the Cambridge Film Festival. No visit to city should be without a punt on the river Cam.

North of the campsite historic Ely has a magnificent cathedral or take a boat trip on the River Great Ouse. The bustling riverside towns of St Ives and St Neots are closeby as is the home of British horse racing – Newmarket.

The National Trust’s Wimpole Hall and Anglesey Abbey, the Imperial War Museum and Denny Abbey and Farmland Museum are popular days out from Cambridge campsite.

Facilities always clean. Site is very well maintained.

Facilities always clean. Site is very well maintained. We stayed here for the Tour De France and wow was it worth it! I do suggest asking for a pitch on the same side as the toilet block though as the building site was behind the hedge and started nice and early banging etc! All was quiet on Sunday and of course during the race day as no traffic could get in or out! Will definitely return. Many many wardens need to look at these guys. They are a shining example and a credit to the club.

As the summary says, it was very refreshing to turn up on a Friday evening after work and find the staff so friendly and helpful. The site is very well kept and the facilities were clean throughout. A very relaxing weekend! Definitely will visit again.

This is such a lovely, well maintained site.

This is such a lovely, well maintained site. The wardens are very helpful and friendly and the facilities are beautifully clean. The site was reasonably busy but still mostly remained nice and quiet - some chaps in two caravans got a bit rowdy just after midnight on the Friday (I can see why some sites do not allow same sex groups . The kids have plenty of area to run around in as well as a decent play area and there's also a dog walk. The site is close to a main road but set well back (down a side lane) so kids and pets remain safe. Access to the city is easy without a car. The number 7 bus leaves about every 20 minutes from across the road or the park and ride is only 5 minutes drive away. Cycling is probably the easiest option - the guided bus route is close by and easily accessible for walkers/cyclists to use the adjacent path to get into Cambridge. If going into the city in the evening, the last bus leaves to come back (from Emmanuel Street) at 23.10. You can get a day rider ticket for 4 each - we used this to go shopping in the morning then go back into the city in the evening. Local to the site, there is a shop across the road as well as a Waitrose about 10/15 mins walk away. There's also a post office and bun shop about 20 mins walk (down to the lights near Waitrose and turn right). We visited to go to an event in the city but will be returning to explore more of the area - including Duxford and also Wimpole Estate which are both only a few miles away.
