Overview

A small, immaculately kept site with a lovely, friendly atmosphere

La Cigale is close to the magnificent Atlantic beaches and within walking distance of Arès town centre. The friendly owners’ attention to detail is apparent throughout the site, not least in the abundant flowers and shrubs that are a feature of the site. There are excellent cycle and walking paths in the surrounding area and nature lovers will enjoy the bird sanctuary at La Teste as well as exploring Arcachon bay, famous for its oysters and oyster farming. While here, a climb to the top of the nearby Dune du Pilat, the highest sand dune (110m) in Europe, is a must.

Early booking is essential - owned and run by the Pallet family.

This site gave us a great welcome. Obviously family run by people who care.

This site gave us a great welcome. Obviously family run by people who care. It is a small site very close (almost within) the town of Ares. In some ways that is probably the only negative as it is right next to the road which was at times busy. The facilities were good with pools to jump into to cool off. The pitches are reasonably sized and easy to access. I think we were a bit unlucky in that our pitch had very peaty soil that never really dried out. It was well worn after a lot of use with not too much grass. You had to be very mindful of leaving shoes at the door if you wanted to maintain a clean living area. I don't think there were many of these so it shouldn't affect most. We weren't fans of the area at the height of season, but once away from the crowds in the tranquil pine/oak forests it was superb. The cycle network was ideal. Right from the campsite entrance you could choose so many different routes of varying distance. All the routes were well signposted and the useful map we were given when we signed in made it easy. They were safe and off road. We even used our bikes to go to a nearby town for a great evening meal and were quite surprised how busy they were even at 10.30 in the evening - don't forget your lights! If you are going out in the car be prepared for lots of traffic. We were there in August so it may be different at other times. A trip to the famous Dune du Pilat became a nightmare as did the stop in Arcachon. Both good places to visit, but when the temperature is hitting 35 degrees plus and you can't find a parking place it makes you wonder why you left those tranquil cycle paths. Also a good centre for a visit to Bordeaux that has a great park and tram ride network and the city is worth a visit. On leaving we got a nice thank you and wave from the staff (family). If the site was elsewhere I would go back, but as we have now seen the 'Bassin d'Arcachon' I think we will look elsewhere.

This is a small site within walking distance of the local town.

This is a small site within walking distance of the local town. The site is beautifully maintained with lovely flowers and shrubs separating the pitches. The facilities are excellent and the restaurant at the entrance is also to be recommended. The owners are very friendly and helpful and the site is well positioned to enjoy all the local attractions. Although there is not much within the site for those with young children to keep them entertained. Definitely well worth a return visit.

We were camping in a tent. Our pitch was big and not too close to neighbours.

We were camping in a tent. Our pitch was big and not too close to neighbours. There was water and electric on our pitch. The snack bar was good. The restaurant just at the gate of the campsite was excellent. Toilets and showers were very clean. Good campsite location as very close to cycle routes and town was close enough to walk to.

Excellent small site which seemed to have a lot of annual returners. Pitches are a good size.

Excellent small site which seemed to have a lot of annual returners. Pitches are a good size. We had our 5 man tent and gazebo and there was still room for the car alongside them. Poolside needs some updating and general upkeep as there were a number of loose bricks whlist walking around the poolside. Good bar and snacks area. Food is well priced but the drinks are a little expensive. The Point at the Cap Ferret is well worth a visit as well as the Dune's near Arachon. Andernos the next village on from Ares has a cosmopolitan fel and a much better choice of restaurants. Will be booking this site again in the future for sure!
