Lighting up dark skies

Dark skies are the perfect excuse to go camping

One piece of news that caught my eye today is that Northumberland National Park and Kielder Water and Forest Park has been made Europe's largest Dark Sky Park.

This is fantastic news, not only to seasoned stargazers but to anyone who has even a vague interest in astronomy.

I probably fall into the latter category. I don't even own a pair of binoculars let alone a telescope, but I still take every opportunity I can get to stare skywards on a starry night.

Ben of the Antarctic?

Ben Saunders, and some ice. Brrrrr.

A short while back I spoke to Ben Saunders, who's aiming to become the first person to recreate Scott of the Antarctic's epic journey to the South Pole and back - an 1,800-mile round trip.

On foot.

Is he mad? No actually, quite sane. In fact adventurous would be a better word to use to describe him. Ben himself told me there's something awesome about the immense scale of the polar regions, and that going there and being the only human in about a bazillion square miles of snow and ice is an incredible feeling.

Rain or shine...

My Force Ten pitched up at Keswick Club Site

I'm fairly sure one of the big daily papers was promising a heatwave to hit us later this month. Let's hope so, but in the meantime I wanted to share a few of my previous camping experiences where I've had a really enjoyable time, even if the weather hasn't been great.

This year, I've already been camping a few times in my little two-berth Force Ten tent (which I love - it feels like home away from home). Most recently I was at Keswick Club Site, pitched about 20ft from Derwentwater with an unobstructed view of the lake and surrounding hills.
