The National Trust is a charity that looks after more than 250,000 hectares of countryside, 710 miles of coastline and hundreds of other special places across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
We look after historic houses, gardens, mills, coastline, forests, woods, fens, beaches, farmland, moorland, islands, archaeological remains, nature reserves, villages and pubs. Then we open them up so that they can be enjoyed by everyone, for ever.
But we can’t do this on our own, with over 67,000 volunteers we’re the largest voluntary conservation organisation in Europe. We are also supported by more than four million members. Without their help and generous financial support, we couldn’t do what we do in bringing the public benefit to the 20 million visitors the built properties we look after and 80 million who enjoy the coast and countryside in our care.
We are responsible for taking care of some of our nations’ most special places, from fields ands streams, mountains and moorlands, to woods and heathland, and to pass them on for future generations to enjoy. In total, 45 per cent of Trust land is within National Parks and 27 percent in Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and supports a rich diversity of wildlife – 40 per cent is designated as nationally important for nature.

So, wherever you are, you’re never more than 40 minutes away from a place looked after by the National Trust. What’s more, we even have campsites in some of the country’s most spectacular locations – so there’s even more opportunity to enjoy landscapes of historic interest and natural beauty.
